One interesting thing about blogging assignments is that everyone in the class can see how well or how poorly everyone else in the class is doing. What will be the net effect of that? Thoughts?
I believe it gives everyone the opportunity to share their opinions and thoughts. It also allows individuals to expand on anothers thoughts without being concerned with a fear of how well or poorly they have or haven't done. It's about being able to come together in a modern technology way as in a classroom, but without desk, committed specific time and completing the task in a invironment that fits the individuals schedual...
Oops I didn't mean to delete my blog but to just expand on it. Blogging gives a different spin on the classroom style learning. I have taken classes before where there was posting on the school's website where students have been rude or attempting to outwit one another but our classmates have been very cordial! I think everyone is interested in learning the material.
I think this is an unfair assumption of your students. The blogging assignments do not solely reflect how well or how poor a student is doing. For some, the blogosphere is a very confusing world and I wouldn't be surprised if writer's block is hitting some folks (think about it, world history is probably not trending on Google as we speak). Some may not be great writers, or slow readers, and it is a little stressful putting your work out there for all to see. It is much different than sitting in a classroom and choosing to participate if one wishes. Maybe the quizzes/exams and final project should reflect how well or poor one did.
Alas, a significant portion of the grade is based on writing submitted as blog posts and on participation in general. So if a student does poorly on the blogging, the student is doing poorly in the class. Everyone in the class can see if assignments are completed, if they are on time, etc. I'd guess that the final grades could all be assigned fairly well by any student in the class. I'm hoping that this dynamic will have a really positive outcome, with students supporting each other's work and expanding each other's understanding of the material.
I am very new to blogging. I see the purpose of it, but at the same time I realize the challenge that goes with it. I understand that it helps improve our writing ability and it promotes collaboration. However, since we all want to put quality in our individual blogs, it becomes time consuming. A heavy workload pressed with time takes out the fun of being able to express our own thoughts and feelings. I guess, tons of reading with blogging is still manageable, but to add essays, research papers, and other things to a hectic life...it becomes a matter of survival.
